Rice is the staple food of the Indian subcontinent

Until very recently in India, rice was used almost entirely as a food crop. But with the Green Revolution and other developments, Indian farmers have started to grow rice for export as well. The Indian basmati rice variety is famous for its aroma and its stickiness, making it perfect for rice dishes such as biryani, pulao, and Chinese fried rice.

Till some time back, India was the largest exporter of non-basmati rice in the world. However, with Chinese and Thai competition growing day by day, this position is under threat. It has been estimated that India will lose its top spot by 2017 at the latest. However, India still dominates the export of Basmati rice with a near-monopoly on the market.

Despite all this, India has been unable to secure a place in the lucrative European market because it simply cannot meet demand levels there. This is because production levels are too low and there are too many middlemen involved in transporting goods to Europe. In fact, there is a lot of potential in exporting Basmati rice to countries like Canada and Australia too. After China and Thailand, India is also one of the world's largest producers.
